Originally established by Decree 45 of 1976 as the Nigerian Airports Authority (NAA), to oversee the operations and maintenance of all Federal airports, the aviation agency was renamed Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in August 1995. It is an agency of the Federal Ministry of Transportation.
In 2013, the Federal Ministry of Aviation launched an ambitious upgrade, rehabilitation and remodelling programme of 22 Federal government-owned airports around the country.
In 2015, FAAN was awarded the U.S. FAA Category One certification which enables bilateral air connections between the two countries, allowing airlines of both sides to fly direct to either country.
